Some items, including pumpkin and carrots, can harm the disposal, because they become stuck and clog up the sink. Separate items that are not going in the garbage disposal from those that are when you are ready to dispose of trash. Put banana peels and similar items in your trash can and scrape the rest of your trash into the garbage disposal.
A normal pipe snake can clean out your washing machine's drain stack if it backs up. Every now and then, lint and other tiny washing machine items can build within the pipe, which can cause it to back up or clog.
If you have a water pipe that freezes, have the tap closest to it turned on so the water can exit while the pipe thaws. If there is too much pressure within the pipe, it may burst, causing other forms of damage in the home.
If you start seeing wet spots or water drops on any walls, it is critical that you shut your main water supply down and get a plumber out as fast as possible. This type of leak is not something to play around with, as it can cause numerous serious problems. If unchecked, these issues can lead to mold, mildew or flooding in your home.
Clean your dryer's lint trap. This saves you from potential problems, including the prevention of fires. Also, check the lint trap to see if there are telltale signs that lint may be leaking into your pipes through holes and tears.
Ensure overflow holes don't have any debris in them. These passages allow your sink to fill up without overflowing onto your floor, and if they're blocked that can cause you a major headache. When you do periodic checks for any other problems or repairs that are needed, take the time to clear the holes that are there to protect you from overflow.
