Tobacco Freedom Can Be Yours With These Ideas

You may find yourself making excuses when your loved ones ask you about your smoking habit. You think you are too old to quit, or you have been smoking for too long to make a difference. Excuses do nothing but demotivate you, and are often based on myths. Check your excuses at the door and stop smoking today by following the advice below.

Plan a regular exercise routine. Exercising will give you a healthy and positive focus for your life. It can also replace cigarettes in your mind. As you gain physical fitness, you will be less likely to want to smoke again. Try to exercise at least five times each week for best results.

As with any other major decision that affects your health, you need to be sure to talk to your doctor about your desire to stop smoking. There is a lot your medial provider can do to help you achieve your goal. Turn to your doctor for guidance and support to improve your chances of success.

These might include drinking a cup of coffee or hanging out in a bar with friends. If you're not strong enough to handles these activities without a cigarette, realize it and just walk away.

Be open about your intention to quit. Let your friends, family and coworkers know that you are going to do it and when your date is. Current smokers will likely be considerate enough to stop smoking around you at that time. You'll also find out who is supportive and who is critical of your habit. Finding support and sources of encouragement might make a future quitting attempt successful, if this one is not the one.

Don't allow yourself "just one puff". The mind can sometimes play tricks on you, especially when you're trying to give up a habit that you have had for years. Don't allow yourself to give in to the idea that just one cigarette won't hurt. It will hurt, and it might just keep you from being able to quit at all.

Celebrate your anniversary of quitting smoking. Once you make it a month from whatever your final quit date was, start looking forward to the next one. Plan to do something special and nice. By looking forward to something positive, you can go through your first year of tobacco freedom with some anticipation and expectation, which will take your mind off the loss and grieving.

Put a little effort into choosing a quit day. Ideally, set your quit date far enough in the future that you can plan for it, but not so far away that it seems intangible. Do not choose a day that will be busy or stressful, and clearly mark the date on your calendar so that you can prepare for it.

Be aware of how easy it is to rationalize with yourself when you're in the throes of withdrawals. Telling yourself that one won't hurt or that you simply need a cigarette to get through a rough patch can be your undoing--plan ahead of time for how you will handle your own attempts to sabotage your quit.

Stop smoking. How is "stop smoking" a tip to quitting smoking? Stop talking about, stop thinking about it and just do it. Put up a mental barrier in your head where you are an ex-smoker and what the rest of the world thinks doesn't matter. Don't tell anyone you're doing it, just do it. Don't say you are trying or that you did quit in the past tense, just say you are quitting. Make an active state of mind.

Look online for a stop smoking calculator. These calculators are a great motivating tool in quitting.
