How To Build A Better Photography Portfolio
Are you looking for a way to transform a casual hobby into a work of art? The techniques in this article will show you how to leave behind drab photographs and start taking dynamic, beautiful pictures! Whether you want to learn how to do your own developing or just need some tips on making better shots, you may find the advice you need in the article below.
Your image sensor settings (ISO) can help you get very good shots if you know how to work with them. If not, they can sabotage your pictures quickly. Keep in mind that high ISO settings mean you will be able to see more on your photo and print a photo with more grain. This can result in awful photos; unless your picture requires that type of effect.
Framing is essential to photography composition. You should zoom in on your main focal point to eliminate anything that takes away from your main subject. This will avoid a cluttered photo.
You don't always have to take your photographs with the camera held horizontally! Vertical shots can produce some excellent looking photographs. Don't forget to use your zoom to accentuate the effect, either zooming in on a detail or zooming out to get the full picture.
Drop the background focus when you are photographing people. When everything in the picture is focused including the background, it will make the picture a bit busy and it will be hard for the viewers to specifically focus on the subject of the picture. You can get your subject to come closer to your camera, or adjust your f-stop settings to achieve this effect.
Take some time to learn the focus-lock feature that is on your camera. Cameras automatically focus on the central figure, so if you are trying to photograph something in the background, you need to manually refocus your camera. This is usually accomplished by first making sure the object is in the center and pressing the shutter only halfway down. Then you move the camera so you can have it framed the way you want it. You can then push the button, and take your shot.
Toying with the focus can create a more interesting photograph. Focus on your subject by using a smaller depth of field, and slightly blur your background. This technique is great for portraits or close ups. The bigger the f-stop number, the bigger the depth of field. This means that if your depth of field is larger, then a larger portion of the picture will appear focused on. This will work well for photographs of landscapes.
Use a variety of shutter speeds to get unusual shots. It is standard practice to use the fastest possible shutter speed to freeze action, but think of what you could do with a slow shutter speed, such as 1/30. Want to photograph that crazy cyclist? You can take a crisp picture of the bicyclist, but the blurred background will give a greater sense of speed.
When you are attempting to take a great photo, make sure you are close enough to the subject. Move closer if it is possible. Terribly far away shots prevent the viewer from seeing clear colors and details. Make it easier for yourself and for your viewers to see your subject clearly and vividly.
Only photography can capture and save the special moments in life. After following these tips, you will no longer be new to the world of photography, but you will become a photographic expert.
