Got A Feline Friend? Read This Today!

Your cat probably seems like the most independent animal you've ever seen. They don't seem to need your attention like a dog might, and they seem self-reliant in almost every way. That may be so, but your cat still needs some care from you. Here are some cat tips to help you give your cat the best care.

If your cat is picky about drinking water, invest in a cat fountain. These battery operated or plug in fountains keep water circulating and aerated. Many cats prefer this. A cat fountain will help keep your cat out of the kitchen sink and the toilet. It will also help prevent your cat from pawing water onto the floor in search of fresh water.

Keep your drapery cords out of the reach of your cat. It is easy for the cat to get his head caught among the cords when playing with them. This accident could trap or injure your cat, or even be fatal. Hide the cords for safety sake.

Avoid using dog products on cats. Cats will react very negatively to any products intended for dogs. This definitely applies to flea products. Canine flea products can be lethal to a cat. If you treat your dog for fleas, make sure you keep the cat away for several hours following the application.

There's always a chance that you cat can slip outside your home and become lost. This can be prevented with a breakaway collar. The collar includes an ID, featuring your name, phone number, and address. If the cat is found, anyone can easily contact you and return the cat to you thanks to the information on the collar.

Encourage your child to play with cats by using toys, not by using their fingers and hands. Choose toys that put distance between the child's hands and the cat's teeth and claws. During a vigorous play session, an excited kitten is more likely to accidentally scratch its playmate's skin. For example, you might use a long wand-type toy with a dangling feather or bell.

While children should help with the care and responsibilities of a cat, leave the litterbox duties to the grownups or older children. A cat's litterbox can carry diseases and parasites. Since younger children may not follow proper handwashing procedures, this job is better left to those older and more responsible.

If you are thinking about getting a new kitty for your family and you have small children, make sure you talk to the kids about how to handle the new pet. Teach them to be gentle with the new kitty. Do not let them play rough with the cat or pull its' tail.

Cats are pretty good at entertaining themselves and are very independent. This does not mean they like to be alone. Make some time to play with your cat. This gives them the bonding they need with their owner. Playtime and love are the two best things that you can provide for your cat.

Cats need to drink water frequently to avoid dehydration. You can tell if your cat is dehydrated if his eyes seem sunken in, his mouth seems dry or he seems less active than usual. Be sure he has plenty of fresh, clean water. You can also try running a gentle stream from the sink or hose for cats who prefer running water to drink. If he still seems dehydrated, seek the advice of your vet, who will know what to do.

If your cat takes all the ornaments off the Christmas tree, don't fight it. Begin collecting attractive cat toys and unbreakable ornaments to decorate the tree next year. Be sure not to decorate with potentially dangerous items like tinsel and garlands. Tinsel is a choking hazard for cats and garlands can cause strangulation.

To help prevent tapeworm infestation in cats, feed a small amount of food grade diatomaceous earth for two weeks out of each month. About a quarter of a teaspoon per cat per day is adequate. Food grade diatomaceous earth kills internal parasites and causes them to be expelled from the system.

Should you leave the house with your cat, make sure that she is wearing a collar with tags. This way, if anything happens and you two become separated, anyone can find her and know how to reach you. Your cat may not like the collar all the time, but when she's out of the house it can save her.

Cats hate a dirty litter box. Litter boxes should be scooped at least once per day, and completely changed each week. Cats are clean, picky animals, and if the litter box gets smelly or full, they will likely look for other areas to go potty. These include carpets, closets and other places you may not know about until the problem is already out of control.

Cats hate a dirty litter box. Cats are clean, picky animals, and if the litter box gets smelly or full, they will likely look for other areas to go potty. These include carpets, closets and other places you may not know about until the problem is already out of control.

It is very easy to only feed your cat dry food, but this may not meet all of your cat's nutritional needs. Dry food has lots of carbohydrates. Dry food has also been connected with excess weight, diabetes and urinary problems. Talk to your vet about different foods you can introduce to keep your healthy and happy.

Is your cat really sweet and lovable? If so, they might make a good therapy pet. Pet therapy uses animals to go into places like nursing homes, and bring some joy to the people there. Your cat will be happy with all the attention, and you can feel good about doing something positive for others.

Do not flush clumpable litter in your toilet. This can lead to problems with your plumbing. Instead just lift the clumps and dispose of them in a trash bag. Don't forget, moisture is what makes the litter clump in the first place! Avoid doing that to your pipes and just dispose of it properly.

Most cats tend towards nocturnal behavior. They are often active at nighttime. If you find that your nocturnal kitties are waking you up in the middle of the night, the solution may be as simple as closing the door to your bedroom. You won't be able to hear their sounds as they walk around in the middle of the night.

Cats have a certain way about them which really can't be described with words. To own one though, surely is to love one! Hopefully this article has helped you in your quest to learn more about cats and taking care of them. They are amazing companions and you should enjoy yours for many years to come.

my page ...
